First Time Round Sandycove – Tuesday 12th September at 6:30pm

The club is planning holding a swim to facilitate any member who is interested in doing their first lap round Sandycove. A lot of the club members use this location as their default open water training area. We are hoping to have a guided lap for first timers. The plan is that more experienced members will swim with the first timers. There will be a maximum of 2 first timers to every experienced lapper but ideally 1:1 if we could get enough experienced people to register.

Anyone planning to try their first lap should be confidently doing 2000m in the pool or at the dam at Iniscarra. The swim distance for a lap is a little variable but generally in the region of 1500 – 1600m. Everyone swimming will be expected to wear a wetsuit and have a tow float. If someone doesn’t have a float the club has a number that can be loaned out for the evening. We will have two kayaks as support for the swimmers.

It is essential that everyone planning to swim registers here at EventBrite both the first timers and the support swimmers. We would really appreciate as many experienced swimmers as possible registering as the number of first timers we can facilitate will be totally dependent on the number of experienced swimmers we have. The event will also be weather dependent so please keep looking at the club WhatsApp in the lead up to the event.

The planned start time is 6:30pm, it is important that we are in the water for 6:30 sharp to ensure everyone finishes before the light fades (about 8:00pm). For that reason people should plan on being there for about 6:00pm – 6:10pm. Also parking is somewhat restricted at Sandycove so people should try to carpool at least from Kinsale. There are double yellow lines in areas at Sandycove and illegal parking rules are enforced at the venue, if there is inconsiderate parking the residents can call the Guards who will come and issue tickets

To make the evening more sociable there will be soup and sandwiches at the bar in the Trident Hotel in Kinsale after the event. This has always been a social highlight of the club year, help make it the best ever this year.
