It is your own responsibility to ensure that you cross over the mats. No manual records will be kept so if you do not hear the electronic bleep as you cross the mats your time has not been recorded. This system is highly accurate and will record splits immediately. Relay teams will pass on the chip as a baton at transition. Detailed results and splits will be available at the prize giving

NB You must pass over the timing mat at transition when making your way to the waters edge for race start or you will not be registered in the race.

Swim -  1.20 Miles

Swim Caps provided must be worn.

Athletes may enter the water and warm up / acclimatize before the official start. Please exit the water when summoned to do so, everyone is to exit the water by 7.35am

The swim will be a water start with swimmers in a line. Competitors numbered 1 to 22 in front. The official starter, Danny Bob McCarthy will start the race by shotgun at 7:45am from the tip of the Pier

Its a Rectangular anticlockwise Swim, passing each of the buoys on the left-hand side, from the start point its a straight 470m approx swim to the 1st Turning Point (TP1) marker, from there its a left turn out to Sea to TP2. Another left turn at the Turning point 2, from there its straight towards Dinish Island, with another left turn at TP3. Then straight back to the slipway/ start, ensure that you cross over the timing mat to record your swim time.

Please cede yourself accordingly at the swim start, i.e. if you‘re a weak swimmer its pointless even dangerous, slogging it out with stronger swimmers !!!

If a swimmer wishes to retire from the swim for any reason, raise your clenched fist in the air, stay calm, and a rescue boat will come to your assistance.

Swim cut-off time 9.00AM

There is a time limit of 1hr 15mins on the swim, but if a marshal feels you are endangering yourself or others you can be withdrawn from the swim. You will be allowed to continue the race if you wish to do so but will receive no official time.

If you withdraw from the swim you will be sin binned until the last competitor proper exits the water. You will then be permitted to continue if you wish but you will not receive an official finish time.

Ensure that you cross over the timing mat, on entering the transition area from the Swim, this receiver will record your swim time.

The Bike - 56 Miles

Hard shell helmets must be worn and fastened before your bike is removed from the bike rack. On exiting the transition area ensure that you cross over the timing receiver, this records your transition time, and begins to record the Bike Time. Bikes cannot be mounted until athletes cross over the yellow line, similarly on the return from the bike course, Cyclists must dismount before the yellow line.

The Civil Defense Jeep will be the lead Car which will travel about 200m ahead followed by a Garda (Police) Motor Bike which will lead out the first bike.  The roads are not closed. The rules of the road must be adhered to at all times. Please obey Marshals, Steward, Civil Defence, Gardai /Police at all times. Four other motorbikes will act as Stewards/Draft marshals.

Needless to mention being a Triathlon there is no back up, so we recommend athletes take at least two spare Tubes or and pump/CO2 Gun / Canisters.

Route ;

From Pier Area (transition) point X on the map proceed to the Road, mounting the bike at the designated spot, proceed left cycling back towards Kenmare bridge approx 3.5miles, point Y on the map. 100m before the turnpoint there will a warning to indicate the turn around, slow down and obey the stewards, from there its straight back passing the original start point, take extra care while passing the Star Marine Centre.

From there its straight on, after 11 miles, there is a Cat 2 climb, its reasonably gradual, getting slightly steeper at the top, the descend into Lauragh is straight forward, but there is a few nasty bends, just after the Joinery Works , (on the left hand side) so slow down, warnings of same are marked on the Road

Lauragh is important, as you’ll be taking a left turn just pass the Church, so slow down and do not go straight! A steward will be in attendance. Incidentally, if you blink you will miss it; there is nothing in Lauragh except a Church!! 100M after this left turn, you will see the ‘Sibhin Pub’, its another left turn here, keeping the Pub on your righthand side.

This is the start of the first Cat 1 climb to The Healy Pass approx 4.4miles (7K). There will be a station/bottle exchange just before the summit where refreshments will be handed out. The descent is fairly technical, extreme caution must be exercised. The next 1.5 miles has more twists and turns than a snakes and ladders board!!! After that it is a steady gradual descent to Adrigole, left hand turn at this T-Junction which will be marshalled and it’s the R572 back to Glengarriff. The Road from Adrigole to Glengarriff is good and wide with long drags and steep straight downhills.

At Glengarriff it’s a sharp left hand turn which will be marshalled (at the Harrington Pub formerly the Blue Loo pub) then it’s the home towards Kenmare. There will be a water station here offering bottled water. This is the start of the second Cat 1 climb (Caha Pass), the last climb of the day, on the bike!!! You’re climbing all the way about 6miles (10k) until you come to the first Tunnel, which is approx 150m long, with three other shorter tunnels shortly afterwards. From here it is downhill for 1.5 with a level cycle for the remaining 7-8 miles into Kenmare Bridge. Overall the road surface through is reasonably but the section, from the first tunnel on for about 2 miles is not great, so be careful, and there is some nasty bends again on this section also. Again warnings are marked on the road. As you approach Kenmare, be aware you are taking a left hand turn just before the Kenmare Bridge, point Y on the map, stewards will be available here. This turn is opposite the Riverdale Hotel and is on a fast downhill right bend. You do not cross the bridge. At this stage it is about 3.50 miles back to the transition area/Dinish Pier. As you approach the transition begin to slow down bearing in mind you will be have to cross over the road to the Pier with your bike  The Marshals will indicate where the Athletes are to dismount and to cross. Also remember runners will be coming against you so please enter and exit the transition area keeping to the left. Rack your Bike before removing your Helmet

GEARING: The standard 23/12 will be sufficient. Beware, the last 200 metres just before the top of the Healy Pass is steeper and most people, if not everyone will have to get out of the saddle to get up it. Otherwise the Healy Pass is just a long drag. The Caha Pass is similar to the Healy Pass but slightly longer, with no steep pinch at the top

Bike cut-off time 14:30PM

Drafting

Under no circumstances will drafting be allowed. No warnings will be given.

4 minute penalty for 1st drafting offence and disqualification for a subsequent penalty. There will be immediate disqualification for any dangerous overtaking.

On disqualification you will be permitted to continue the cycle but will receive no time. And remember side by side is drafting also, and is not permitted

RUN 13.1 miles

After racking your bike you will exit the transition area onto the road to the left heading for Kenmare. Point A on the map. You must keep to the left hand side of the road.

This road is not closed and this section is particularly busy. Please obey marshals, stewards and Gardai. Do not cross the road until invited to do so. This will take place and point B on the map. Also depending on your position in the race please beware that there may be cyclists coming against you.

Once you exit the main road you will begin a scenic but hilly climb through route XY on the map. This loop XY must be completed TWICE. A water station is positioned at point X on the map. Water bottles, Some energy drink and gels will be available. There will be a timing mat at point Y on the map. When you are running the loop and because the road is narrow please keep to the left hand side of the road at all times. While this road is very quiet please beware it is a public road and expect a few cars.

When you are finished your second loop you exit on to the main road at point B and head for home. Please stay at the left hand side of the road.

Final cut off time 4.30p.m.
